…it’s a blog!
Hey all, and welcome to the Colby Echo‘s first-ever editor blog: Echoes from the Editors.
I’m often asked who we are at the Echo, how we choose our stories, our staff, and how the paper gets printed each week. Here on our blog, you can follow our journey from ideas to print, one semantic snafu at a time. We’ll talk about our experiences as student journalists and also just students– what’s really going on around campus. Who’s talking (or not talking) and why. What issues are students most concerned about on the Hill, around our local community, and all over the world.
Our contributers will almost exclusively be editors past and present, and we’ll cover all kinds of issues. One of the beautiful things about being a part of a student-run newspaper at Colby is that we have true autonomy in deciding what we cover and how we cover it, and that same free voice will carry over into this new and exciting forum.
And now.. for the question… Who is the Colby Echo?
Okay that’s a big question. Let’s start small. I’m Beth. Hi.
[photo|class:left|id:1225|size:300]Thats me there on the left, sitting with Taylor Tully ’10, one of my good friends here at the College. If you’re wondering about the gorgeous background, I studied abroad in Paris last semester, and we’re sitting in the square at Hôtel de Ville. In Paris, I lived about a ten minute walk away from this spot, in the 11th arrondissement right next to the Bastille. Taylor actually studied abroad in Tanzania, but he made a quick stop in Europe on the way home to the US and so we had the opportunity to hang out. (We college students live tragically unfulfilling lives ….)
Anyway, this year at the Echo I’ve been honored with the position of Editor-in-Chief. I have also been completely blessed with the most amazing team of editors you could imagine. Seriously, they are the best. And they can probably introduce themselves better than I will be able to, so I’ll let them say their own “hellos” on their own time.
Until then, I’ll leave you with an image that more or less sums up Tuesday nights in the basement of Roberts Union, where our editorial boardroom resides and the magic happens.
[photo|id:1226|size:full]It’s an image from a few years ago at this point… My guess is 2007, but while some of the faces have changed, the Tuesday night scene has more or less stayed exactly the same: we work really hard, have a great time doin` it, and produce the best paper we can each week. Occasionally, we sleep.
So, welcome to our blog, our writings, and our voices from way up on Mayflower Hill. This year, the Echo goes multimedia, so be sure to check back and see what’s new!
