Diner's Diary: Uncle Dean's Good Groceries
Like the Green Spot, Uncle Dean's Good Groceries is one of Waterville's hidden gems. Situated a little off of KMD, one can find Uncle Dean's to the right of the set of lights closet to CVS, but it is not till one is inside of Uncle Dean's that one learns why it was worth the trip.
At the entrance to Uncle Dean's, one is greeted with a myriad of local produce and bread from the Daily Bread in Levant, Maine. If you are lucky enough to have access to a kitchen on campus, I highly recommend using their cinnamon raisin bread for some epic french toast. Yet, despite their amazing selection, organic produce is really not what Uncle Dean's excels at. It is in fact Uncle Dean's dry goods and frozen goods that are truly impressive. From hard to find spices to spelt flour, Uncle Dean's carries ingredients that I have not been able to track down elsewhere in Waterville.
Like Barrel's downtown, Uncle Dean's lots of products from local vendors including ice cream from Stone Fox Farms in Monroe, fresh pasta from Blue Ribbon Farm in Mercer, and butter from Palmer Hill Farms in Thorndike, Maine. But, the one thing you absolutely can't miss is a chocolate fudge cookie from Good Bread in Newport, Maine. These guys are a little too conveniently located up front by the registers.
Uncle Dean's is open Monday-Friday 8am-7pm, and Saturday 9am-6pm.
