Get involved with SGA!

The College’s Student Government Association (SGA) is a student-run entity that operates as a liaison between the student body and the administration and trustees.

Beyond its work on policy and student needs, SGA funds clubs and plans events. SGA is made up of several parts. There is a seven-member executive board, a dorm president for every dorm and two class presidents for each year. SGA members meet every Sunday at 7 p.m.; every other week, these meetings are open to the public.

As a first-year, you may be wondering how you can get involved. Our primary elections are held in the spring.; however, we will be holding an election for first-year class presidents and Williams Hall dorm president in mid-September.

Dorm presidents attend meetings, survey residents and inform their residents about SGA proceedings. Dorm presidents campaign within their dorms and are elected by their fellow residents. Class presidents represent the interests and concerns of their classes and keep their classmates informed about SGA news. Class presidents must campaign in pairs with a running mate and are elected by their classmates.

You can also become involved by applying for a committee position. There are a variety of different committees that allow faculty, administrators, SGA members and other students to work together on specific issues. Watch the official announcements in early September for more information on SGA elections and committee applications.

Whether or not you become involved in SGA, you should take advantage of our many services! We provide the national newspapers for your enjoyment in all the dining halls and we periodically offer discounted movie tickets. For those of you who do not have a car on campus, we sponsor the Zipcar Program. Membership in this program allows you to reserve a car at any time for a low cost. We also support over 100 campus clubs!

Transparency is one of SGA’s priorities for the 2012-13 school year. Do not hesitate to convey your concerns and ideas to an SGA member. We all want to create positive change on the Hill and we recognize that achieving our goals is not possible without your help. Your input, ideas and contributions will be an essential part of bringing the College together.
