Colby Emergency Response keeps students safe

With such high numbers of hospitalizations on campus the first weekend, the Colby Emergency Response squad continues to watch over the safety of students on the Hill.

Cutting expenses on textbooks

In response to the inflation of textbook prices over the past 20 years, a new federal rule enacted in July states that publishers cannot bundle textbooks and workbooks, or other materials, without selling them separately. Additionally, colleges are now required to list assigned books during registration so that students will have access to the cost of materials before deciding whether to enroll in a course.

Udall Scholarships Awarded

Blair Braverman '11 and Sarah Sorenson '11 both won scholarships from the Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Foundation on April 8. The juniors, both majoring in environmental policy, are two of 80 students out of a pool of 537 to receive the scholarships based on their commitment to careers in the environment, health care or tribal public policy.

Psych grad utilizes degree

Although Nina Gold '09 recently graduated from the College, she has already accomplished a great deal. And this is just the beginning. Gold currently works as a clinical research coordinator and is also applying to medical school. Additionally, she recently received the Erlbaum Award from the International Honor Society in Psychology Psi Chi for her research on preschool children and the correlation between numeracy and age.

When confronted with the multitude of name-games that required fun facts during orientation, Maddy Jones '13 didn't have to look far to find one. "I’m ranked third nationally in snowboarding for my age group: women's 16-17," she states casually.

Colby on Stage:?Sampling the arts

"Colby on Stage," performed Friday and Saturday evenings during Family Homecoming weekend, did a wonderful job giving students and their families a snapshot of the arts at Colby. Though only a half-hour in duration, the four performing groups managed to showcase previous productions and allow a glimpse of what to expect for the 2009-10 season. Both theater and dance programs put together short pieces to display the plethora of artistic opportunities at the college.

Pursuing a unique passion

"There is no greater thrill in the world than sitting behind a horse in a race. The adrenaline, the action ... it's really addictive," Brian Blanchard '12 says. A Maine native, Blanchard has been involved in harness horse racing since the age of ten.
