Crew teams earn 7th, 25th
The Head of the Charles Regatta, a prestigious boat race in Massachusetts, took place this past weekend. Colby entered two teams in the race, a men’s team and a women’s team.
The men, who are focusing on fours racing this fall, raced in the collegiate fours on Saturday and managed to place seventh out of 40 boats in their race with a time of 17:47:78, less than four seconds out of third place. The boat consisted of stroke Peter Smithy ’12, rowers Noah Teachey ’13, Jack Vihstadt ’12 and David Jensen ’12 as well as coxswain Jillian Howell ’12. That same boat won the bronze medal at the Snake Regatta in Worcester, Mass. earlier this season, while Nate Krump ’13 subbed in for Jensen as the boat took third at the Textile Regatta in Lowell, Mass.
The University of Virginia won the race, followed by Fordham University, Trinity College, Bowdoin College, Wesleyan University and University of California at Davis before the Mules stormed in.
The women’s eight boat took to the water on Sunday, and they finished in 25th place. The women’s final time was 19:06:82. The boat consisted of coxswain Karen Clark ’12, stroke Justine Seraganian ’13 and rowers Becca Herman ’14, Anni Tester ’14, Olivia Collins ’14, co-captain Caroline Riina ’12, co-captain Elise DeSimone ’12, Molly Clark ’13 and Kristin Marks ’12.
The Colby crew teams will wrap up their fall season of competition in their only home event of the fall. The Mules will play host to Bates College and Bowdoin College in the annual Colby/Bowdoin/Bates (CBB) race this coming Saturday on Messalonskee Lake in Sidney, Maine.
