Crew teams sweep
While most Colby students were relaxing on the sunny beaches of the Caribbean or the snowcapped peaks of the Rockies, Colby athletics was still hard at work. The crew teams exemplified this spirit by traveling down to Georgia for the Hunter Regatta in Gainesville on Saturday, March 24. Both the men and women showed very well in their heats on Saturday.
The men won their heat by more than 11 seconds over second-place finisher Tulane University, followed by Emory University, the University of Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Louisiana State University (LSU) and the University of Georgia. Colby finished with a time of 6:36, while the Mules’ second boat took third in its heat, losing to Georgia Tech and the University of Florida by 12 and one second, respectively.
Not to be outdone, the women showed up their competition in even more impressive fashion, leading the pack of Georgia Tech, LSU, the College of Charleston and the University of Auburn at the finish line by over 12 seconds, with a time of 7:45.96.
Unfortunately, Colby was unable to compete in the final heats held on Sunday due to the need to return to school for classes on Monday. Given their strong showing on day one, the Mules easily could have made an impact on day two.
Colby crew had this past weekend off, but will resume its spring season in Worcester, Mass. next weekend for a race against Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Wesleyan University, Middlebury College and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
