Field hockey earns first NESCAC win

Colby field hockey found its way into the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) win column this past weekend with a victory over Hamilton College on Sunday, Oct. 16. The Mules also dropped a league game to eighth-ranked Amherst College, 4-1.

On Saturday, the Mules found themselves down early to the Lord Jeffs as Amherst’s Chrissy Cantore opened the scoring 6:40 into the game. Colby’s Caitlyn Lancaster ’12 notched the equalizer just a minute later off a pass from Caroline Chessare ’13.

That was as close as Colby managed to get, as Amherst’s Katie McMahon found the back of the net twice, and Sarah McCarrick added another. Colby’s Michelle Burt ’14 made 11 saves in net, while the Jeffs’ keeper was forced to make just five saves. With the win, Amherst moves to 9-1 overall (6-1 in the NESCAC).

On Saturday, however, the Mules earned their first NESCAC win as they outplayed Hamilton, earning a 4-2 victory.

Hamilton’s Nikki Haskins opened the scoring at 11:54 of the first half, but backed into a corner, Colby took over. Chessare scored two goals in 48 seconds to give the Mules a 2-1 lead. Lancaster earned the assist on both goals.

The Continentals tied the tilt as Erin McNally scored on a penalty corner at 25:24. Again, the Mules responded: Courtney Erskine ’13 scored Colby’s third goal—the game-winner—just 13 seconds later on an assist from Kaitlyn O’Connell ’15. Hannah O’Brien ’12 added a fourth goal for good measure on an assist from Sally Klose ’12.

Burt made six saves for the Mules; Hamilton keeper Victoria Trentini made five.

With the win, Colby moves to 3-8 overall (1-7 in the NESCAC). Colby plays St. Joseph’s Tuesday night at home before traveling to Williams College this weekend for the Mules’ penultimate NESCAC matchup.
