Field hockey season ends
A brutal loss to Bates College ended the field hockey season this week. At the end of a thrillingly close match, Colby came up one goal short. Although they had five fewer shots on net, the Bates Bobcats managed to slip in the only goal of the game. The ball was knocked in only a few minutes into the second half by Polly Merck, securing the 1-0 win for Bates.
Goaltender Michelle Burt ’14 made four saves during the game, bringing her season total to 108.
Having just closed its season, Colby is 4-10 overall and 1-9 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). With the last win under its belt, Bates finished 4-10 overall and 2-8 in the NESCAC.
Hannah O’Brien ’12, Caroline Chessare’13 and Courtney Erskine ’13 led the Mules with eight points each on the season.
Although not the ending they had hoped for, if anything, the close loss made the Mules more excited for next year. “The season had some ups and downs,” Burt said. “We know what we need to do and [are] ready to work even harder and come out fighting next year.”
