Women's cross country wins State of Maine Championship
The women’s and men’s cross country teams dominated the Maine Intercollegiate Championships on Oct. 15 in New Gloucester, Maine, coming in first and fourth place, respectively, on the Pineland Farms course.
On the women’s side, co-captain Berol Dewdney ’13 led the Mules to their seventh state championship in the last eight years (12th overall) with a second-place finish out of a field of nine teams. Molly Carl of the University of Southern Maine (USM) grabbed the title on the five-kilometer course in a time of 19:01, barely edging out Dewdney, who ran the route in 19:03.
Dewdney and Eva Lauer ’15, who took fifth place with a time of 19:16, earned all-state honors for their efforts. Layne Schwab ’13 finished in ninth place (19:37), Claire Dunn ’13 in 10th place (19:38), Claire Cannon in 15th place and Kate Connolly in 16th. Overall, the Mules tallied 41 points, beating the second-place team, Bowdoin College, by only three points.
The men’s cross country team earned fourth place in a field of 12 teams with an overall score of 115. Will McCarthy ’15 finished in 25th place with a time of 27:41 over the five-mile course. Charlie Coffman ’15 took 26th place (27:42), Jeff Hale ’15 took 28th place (27:47) and Matthieu Nadeau ’12 took 30th (27:56). Bates College earned first place overall with 23 points, Bowdoin took second with 43 points and USM finished in third with 70 points.
Both cross country teams will continue the championship section of their seasons with upcoming meets over the next month. On Oct. 29, the Mules will compete in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championships in Amherst, Mass., before attending the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships, the New England Division III Championships and the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Championships in November.
